âAm I only imagining that you mean to imply it isnât, in fact, a coincidence?â
âWell...I think itâs definitely a coincidence that we met up again. And as for ancient hieroglyphics being Japanese and there being a ton of them here... I canât really say.â
âHmm...â
That meant he thought the other parts were different, though. That reminded Soma, there was something heâd had in the back of his mind from their discussion upon reuniting...
âDo you mean to say that it isnât a coincidence that you were summoned to this world and I was reincarnated into it?â
Iori didnât immediately respond to the question, which was a response in itself.
âItâs not like I have any proof.â
âBut there must be some way to prove it.â
It made sense to Somaâhis friend was in the world heâd been reincarnated into. How big of a coincidence would that have to be?
âWell, maybe if you wanted to say weâre connected by a red string of fate, itâd be different.â
âIâd like to refrain from that.â
âMe too, donât worry.â
âIâm glad to hear that. So what do you mean exactly?â
When Soma asked that question, Iori looked up. Soma followed his gaze, but all he saw was an unfamiliar ceiling. However, Ioriâs eyes crinkled as if he saw something else there, and he opened his mouth slowly.
âDid I tell you about how I got summoned here as a hero?â
âWell, we just went over that. I donât believe youâve told me the details, however. Do you mean to say that this is related to that?â
âYeah. So, actually... Apparently I wasnât supposed to be summoned in the first place.â
âWhat do you mean...?â
Soma hadnât heard the details from Iori, but he knew the general story of how the heroes had been summoned. Veritas had summoned them in order to eliminate the threat of the Dark Lord. Theyâd done so because they hadnât had enough forces to resist him on their own. So what did Iori mean, he wasnât supposed to be summoned?
âOh... Well, this is just what Iâve heard, and some of itâs from Veritas, so I donât know how trustworthy it is... But apparently they summoned me on their second try.â
âSecond try...?â Did that mean that someone had already been summoned before Iori?
Iori shook his head. âNo, apparently their first try failed.â
âFailed... Do you mean that nobody was summoned?â
âYeah. They did the ceremony and nothing happened. They cracked down on anyone who knew that information, though.â
âHmm...â
That made sense. If theyâd failed out of incompetence, it would have led to criticism of Veritas. They must have laid groundwork all over if they were going to summon a hero, but Soma had heard that Veritasâs power had been unparalleled at the timeâso much so that theyâd become the center of the fight against the Dark Lord. It must not have been especially difficult for them to suppress a minor failure.
âYet they tried to do the same thing that had already failed once? Were they really out of other options?â
âNo... What I heard is that they meant to fail again.
